How it Works

STEP by STEP Process

We’ll make joining us an easy and joyful experience. Simply follow these steps to start the process.

how

Give Us a Call

Or email us, try a web chat, or submit a form inquiry. Finding the right options begins and ends with a personal relationship. A Skylark professional will guide you through the process, help you find a personalized solution for your loved one, and develop a budget for care.

Let’s Get to Know Each Other.

This is a mutual process. You’ll have questions for us, and we’ll have questions for you. We’re going to want to get to know your loved one well. We want to know your care challenges and needs. It’s important that you become confident in us and our expertise.

Customize Services.

It’s time to choose the needed services. Is the Day Center the perfect solution? Perhaps having an aide come to the house on a regular basis will be the answer. Perhaps a combination of both would be better.

Assessments.

We’ll meet with you and your loved one to complete assessments. We’ll develop a care plan that addresses home safety issues, health concerns, interests, and daily needs.

We want to discover your loved one’s interests and personality to ensure a smooth transition when starting Home Care or at the Day Center. The assessments help us identify great strategies for the Home and for the Center.

Complete Enrollment.

Once we develop a plan, our caring professionals will guide you through the enrollment process. As with all health care services, there will be some documents to sign and some information to gather. We’ll determine a start date and ongoing schedules.

Start Services.

The first days are exciting. We’ll confirm first day procedures for arriving at your home or attending the center. We want to make sure the first day is wonderful for you and your loved one.

Ongoing Services

Our mission is to Inspire Freedom, Hope, and Joy in our Seniors and Those Who Love Them. As care partners, we’re here to support you and your loved one. In the ups and downs of caregiving, we’ll be there to help on this journey.

FAQ's

What are you doing during COVID-19 Pandemic?

We know you’re trying to protect your home and your loved one from the pandemic. We’ve been working hard throughout the pandemic to keep our Members and Associates safe and healthy.

Here’s what we’re doing for home care:

Our Associates undergo regular COVID-19 testing. We ensure they have ample Personal Protective Equipment for use in the home and especially in the provision of personal care. All Associates participate in a coronavirus training developed by In The Know Caregiver Training.

Our associates are instructed to follow COVID-19 precautions per the CDC while in the member’s
home.

Our associates are screened before the start of each shift. Temperature check and the typical COVID screening questions are also required before the start of each shift.

Finally, we work with families to keep our Members safe. Masking and social distancing requirements will be determined in conjunction with the member and family depending on care needs and vaccine status.

What is home care? What can caregivers do?

Private home care provides peace of mind, watchful oversight in the home, companionship, and help with daily activities and responsibilities such as:

  • Companionship
  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Meal preparation
  • Medication reminders
  • Light housekeeping
  • Running errands and transportation to appointments

Let us know what your loved one wants or needs.  We’ll figure out how to do it or, if it is beyond our scope of services, we can refer you to a reputable company.

What’s special about Skylark? “What do you do to engage my loved one? The company I have now watches my husband watch TV”

Since 2006, we’ve been a senior care leader in Georgia.  We specialize in adult day centers and home care.  Each service strengthens the other.

Families look for engagement, not just TV watching.  Our caregivers spend time in our adult day centers.  Social engagement is core to what we do.

Our members have choices.  Some members receive care only in their homes.  Some receive care only in the center.  Many combine home care and the day center.  The choice is yours.  There are powerful options for social engagement not available anywhere else.

What is the difference between home health and home care?

Home health involves skilled care by a nurse, a physical therapist, occupational therapist, or a speech therapist.  Home health requires a physician’s order and is typically paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and major health insurance plans.  These visits are usually under an hour long and last for a limited time period.  A patient might receive wound care, an infusion, physical therapy, or other very skilled service.

Home care focuses on helping individuals remain independent in their homes and communities with caregiving assistance.  The care is provided during hourly shifts and paid for privately (and not paid with health insurance).

How do I know it’s time for home care?

We want to respect your loved one’s independence and personal preferences even through injury and illness.

We’ve helped many families with their caregiving journeys.  Mothers may be resistant to receiving help taking care of Dad.  Dad may be home from the hospital expecting help from his children, but the care needed is more than what the family can provide.  There are many reasons our loved ones need care from isolation to depression to frailty to the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Here are some clues that additional help is needed:

  • Falls
  • A messy house
  • Inadequate groceries
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Declining personal hygiene declined
  • Increased loneliness and isolation
  • Memory lapses

Many realize that help is needed when visiting a loved one and notice a problem.  The pressing care needs are more than the family can provide while juggling multiple responsibilities of children, family life, and work.  Make sure to keep an eye on the family caregiver, especially if they experience:

  • Too much stress
  • Imbalance in self-care
  • A neglect of other responsibilities
  • A lack of sleep
  • Potential burnout

Choosing to engage compassionate professionals or use an adult day center is not a compromise. It’s a choice to enhance your loved one’s quality of life and encourage the best possible outcome.

What are the qualifications of your caregivers?

We work hard to build a team of excellent caregivers and associates.

This begins with the selection process that includes a thorough interview, a negative drug screen, an FBI fingerprint` criminal background check, a negative COVID test, and reference checks.

Our associates complete regular training including a thorough orientation, certification in First Aid and CPR, training in Alzheimer’s and other dementia, and an ongoing series of in-service programming.

How much does home care cost?

We charge an hourly rate for services ranging from 4 hours to 24 hours.  Some families choose to combine an experience in our Day Center with our Home Care services.  We can also increase or decrease service times to fit your budget and service needs.

It’s best to give us a call to discuss what is needed.  We’ll work with you to find a solution to fit your budget.

Why should I engage Skylark, when it appears less expensive to hire someone directly?

If you hire a caregiver directly, you’re taking on the responsibilities and liabilities of an employer.

You’ll be responsible for reporting and paying federal and state taxes and unemployment claims.  Without Workers Compensation coverage, you will have full responsibility for injuries. If there is an unemployment claim, the state will look to you as the employer.  Even if the private caregiver says they will take care of these items, if there is a problem, the government agencies will likely come after you.

Skylark does all this for you.  We’ll ensure you have excellent caregivers while taking care of all employment responsibilities such as payroll, employment taxes, vacations, and illness.  We’ll take care of the scheduling hassles when an absence is unavoidable and another caregiver is needed.

Does insurance pay for this? How do I pay for it?

Most Members pay privately for home care services.  Some families work together to provide the needed care for their loved ones.

Medicare and other health insurances does not cover the expense of in-home care with the exception of a very limited number of Medicare Advantage plans.  Medicare pays for short-term skilled care with home health.

Long-Term Care Insurance:  Most long-term care insurance policies will pay for home care services.

Veterans:  Many veterans will receive significant support by qualifying for the Aide and Attendance Pension benefit.

Medicaid: Medicaid covers a wide range of long-term care services for qualified elderly and disabled persons.

Skylark has been navigating these financial options for years.  Call us to discuss, and we can help determine the non-private pay options.

Can my loved one have one caregiver or expect several caregivers?

Skylark strives for consistency, and our families certainly become comfortable with particular caregivers.  We always begin with a professional evaluation to determine care needs and identify great caregivers.  Our goal is to find a great fit for our members and their families.

We schedule caregivers based on the wants and needs of our members.  Often, we find that a small, consistent team of caregivers provides the best and most reliable care.

It’s best to give us a call to discuss your specific situation.  We believe in customizing our services to fit the specific needs of the family.

More questions? How do I get started?
