The Importance of Support Groups

A Personal Reflection

Support Group

Over the years, I’ve learned that one of the greatest gifts we can give—and receive—is understanding. When you’re navigating the complex world of caregiving, aging, or memory loss, it can feel like you’re carrying the weight of it all on your shoulders. But here’s the truth—you don’t have to do it alone. And that’s exactly why I want to tell you about something truly special happening at Skylark Senior Care.

Skylark has recently launched a free monthly virtual support group, and I can’t emphasize enough how valuable this is for caregivers and family members. The Skylark Virtual Care Partner Support Group meets from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on the second Tuesday of each month. It’s led by the incredible Mary Caldwell, a Gerontologist with over 14 years of experience, a master’s degree in gerontology, and a foundation in social work, community-based programs, and dementia education. Mary is a thoughtful, collaborative leader who knows how to guide both individuals and organizations through the challenges of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

This group isn’t just a meeting—it’s a lifeline. A place to exhale, to share, to listen, and to be surrounded by people who get it. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, looking for answers, or just need a space to be heard, this group offers comfort and real connection. It reminds you that you’re not alone, and that there are others walking this same path, facing the same uncertainties, and offering support without judgment.

I’ve seen firsthand the difference Skylark makes. Since 2006, we provided adult day and home care across Georgia—but what stands out to me is how we do it. At Skylark, caregiving isn’t just a job—it’s a partnership. We approach every senior as a whole person, someone with a story, a spark, and a song all their own. Just like the skylark bird that inspired the name, each person is unique in their needs, experiences, and personality. That’s something I deeply respect.

The people Skylark cares for have lived incredible lives. I’ve met Veterans, teachers, business leaders, and caregivers themselves—mothers, fathers, sons, daughters—who have seen and shaped some of the most defining moments in our history. Their stories move me. They remind me why it’s so important to help them hold on to their memories, maintain their dignity, and live with purpose and joy. Being part of that process, even in a small way, is something I’m incredibly grateful for.

I’ve learned that aging touches each of us differently. For some, it’s the memory that fades; for others, it’s the body that slows down. But every person—every family—has their own journey. That’s why when someone reaches out to Skylark, the first questions aren’t about diagnosis or logistics. They’re about what inspires you? What brings you joy? What makes you feel free? That approach speaks to me. It’s about building a care plan that uplifts, supports, and brings moments of happiness—both in Skylark’s centers and at home.

So if you’re feeling the stress of caregiving, or just want to connect with others who understand the journey, I wholeheartedly encourage you to join the support group. It’s free, it’s virtual, and it might just be exactly what you need right now.

Meets Monthly: Second Tuesday
