A New Approach to Supporting Early-Stage Dementia

A New Program Designed to Help People Stay Engaged, Connected and Confident

When a loved one begins experiencing memory changes or receives an early-stage dementia diagnosis, families often find themselves asking a difficult question:

“What do we do now?”

The answer doesn’t have to be simply “wait and see.”

Skylark Senior Care is introducing BrainBloom, a new structured, evidence-informed program designed specifically for adults experiencing early memory changes and early-stage dementia. BrainBloom is coming to Skylark in October 2026, and enrollment is now underway.
The philosophy behind BrainBloom is straightforward: focus on the person, not the diagnosis.

Why Starting Early Matters

Early participation can provide an opportunity to establish routines, relationships and confidence while individuals can still actively participate in the process.

At BrainBloom, familiar faces, trusted relationships and a supportive community can become part of a person’s routine. As needs change over time, that familiarity can provide continuity for both the individual and their care partner.

This isn’t about putting someone into a program simply because they have a diagnosis.

It’s about creating opportunities for them to keep doing, learning, connecting and participating.

Built Around Strengths — Not Limitations

One of the defining ideas behind BrainBloom is that activities are built around each member’s existing strengths and abilities, rather than focusing solely on what has changed.

Programming can include:

  • Conversation and social interaction
  • Creativity
  • Movement
  • Music
  • Lifelong learning
  • Purposeful activities
  • Hands-on experiences
  • Projects that build on skills over time

Members are thoughtfully matched with peers with similar cognitive, social and functional abilities. This creates opportunities for natural conversation, meaningful friendships and a genuine sense of belonging.

And perhaps just as importantly, BrainBloom provides a consistent daily routine while remaining flexible enough to respect each person’s personality, energy level and individual needs.

The Five Pillars of BrainBloom

Every BrainBloom day is built around five therapeutic pillars designed to support the whole person:

Cognitive • Physical • Emotional • Social • Spiritual

The goal isn’t simply to keep someone busy.

Activities are intentionally designed to build on existing abilities, encourage participation and foster confidence while adapting to each member’s unique strengths.

Purposeful Learning That Builds Confidence

BrainBloom incorporates a therapeutic scaffolding approach—starting with familiar concepts and gradually introducing new challenges.

Activities are designed to support skills such as:

  • Attention
  • Planning
  • Sequencing
  • Memory
  • Problem-solving

Conversation, movement, visual cues and hands-on experiences are used to reinforce learning. Repetition, rhythm, choice and gentle cueing can help members experience success and build confidence.

Some projects can even continue over time, allowing members to deepen their engagement, strengthen skills and experience a sense of accomplishment.

More Than a Program for the Individual

BrainBloom recognizes something every care partner understands:

Caring for someone you love can be rewarding—but it can also be exhausting.

That’s why the program is designed to support care partners, too.

BrainBloom provides care partners with valuable respite and peace of mind while their loved one participates in purposeful, therapeutic programming. The program also includes a support group for the primary care partner and the individual living with dementia, along with a Lunch Bunch designed to encourage social engagement with care partners.

The center-based program will meet two days per week and is specifically designed for individuals in the earlier stages of dementia who may benefit from a more challenging program and who can be socially engaged in the right situations.

What Can Families Hope to See?

According to Skylark’s BrainBloom materials, families and members may notice that participants:

  • Look forward to attending regularly.
  • Experience their days as community rather than simply supervision.
  • Build social confidence through genuine friendships.
  • Stay engaged in purposeful activities.
  • Develop familiarity and trust with the people around them.

For care partners, that can mean something equally important: knowing that their loved one is engaged in a supportive environment while they have an opportunity for meaningful respite.
